GETTING THERE & AWAY |
BY AIREthiopia's national airline, Ethiopian Airlines, operates three flights a week from London, England (with a stopover either in Frankfurt, Germany or Cairo, Egypt) to Addis Ababa. Lufthansa operates three flights a week from London to Addis Ababa via Frankfurt. Ethiopian Airlines has also commenced direct flights from Washington, D.C., USA to Addis Ababa via some cities in Europe. Approximate flight time from Addis Ababa to London is ten hours. The airport in Addis Ababa, The Bole International Airport, is located 8Km (5 miles) Southeast of the city. Travel time to the city is approximately 20 minutes. A coach service departs regularly to the city. Airport facilities include duty-free shopping, car rentals, banking, bureau de change, post office, hotel reservation points, restaurants and bars. It is worth mentioning that there is a departure tax of US $20; this usually catches most visitor off guard. BY ROADThe main route is via Kenya. There is an all-weather road from Moyale (border city between Kenya and Ethiopia) via Yabelo, Dila and Yirga to Addis Ababa. The following border points are also open: Dewale/Galafi (from Djibouti), Humera/Metema (from Sudan) and Jijiga (from Somalia). The Zal-Anbessa/Rama/Bure access roads between Ethiopia and Eritrea are currently not functional due to the ongoing Ethio-Eritrean war (May 1998 - Present). BY RAILA 784 Km (487 miles) rail service between Djibouti and Addis Ababa is run jointly by the government of Ethiopia and Djibouti. The service is currently closed to visitors as it serves as the primary shipping route for the import of goods in and out of Ethiopia. Since the outbreak of war between Ethiopia and Eritrea (May 1998), Ethiopia has diverted all trade to Djibouti. BY SEAThere were regular sailings between European and Middle Eastern ports and the ports in Massawa and Assab which served Ethiopia. However, with the independence of Eritrea in 1993 and the subsequent Ethio-Eritrean war (May 1998 - Present), access to Ethiopia through these ports is not available. Visitors can still utilize Djibouti's ports for entry to Ethiopia. |
