GETTING AROUND |
BY TAXIAvailable in all major cities and towns, this is the most preferred means for tourists to get around. The taxis, painted blue and white, offer service on a shared basis. Fares should be negotiated before traveling. BY BUSServices are run by the government and private companies and they operate through out the country. The bus terminals can provide schedules and tickets. It is very unusual for tourists to attempt to use this service. RENT A CARThis is available in Addis Ababa. A foreign license is valid for up to one month. Otherwise, the visitor needs to obtain a temporary Ethiopian driving license on arrival. A network of all-weather roads exists to most business and tourist centers. Otherwise, 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Vehicle travel after dark outside of Addis Ababa is risky. Traffic drives on the right. BY AIREthiopia's national airline, Ethiopian Airlines, runs internal flights to over 40 cities and towns. However, these services are infrequent. There is a departure tax of US $10 for these internal flights. BY RAILThe only operative line runs between Addis Ababa and Djibouti via the city of Dire Dawa. However, the service is currently closed to visitors as it serves as the primary shipping route for the import of goods in and out of Ethiopia. Since the outbreak of war between Ethiopia and Eritrea (May 1998), Ethiopia has diverted all trade to Djibouti. |
