Humble Beginnings is the perfect word to describe Ras Abel's career. Born in 1972 in Addis Ababa, this young Ethiopian moved to the US eleven years ago. In the early 1990s, while attending college in Maryland, Ras Abel embraced the livity of Rastafari. It was in college that he met a brother by the name of Belachew who encouraged young Ras to express his lyrical ability. While away from school Ras Abel, Belachew (an accomplished bassist) and Belachew's brother Dula (an accomplished keyboardist) would spend the summers making music to merely satisfy their souls. From there the love of making music developed and in 1994 they recorded two demos "Forward to Zion" and "Love is 'n de air" (tracks two and four on Humble Beginnings). Ras Abel began to see music as his calling and therefore postponed college. Due to the hardship of life in Babylon, he was not able to pursue music full-time. However he continued to work with Dula at his studio in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Between 1996 and 1999, Ras Abel would spend a few months out of the year coordinating with Dula and Tensae on his first project; thus leading to the release of his debut effort "HUMBLE BEGINNINGS" in 2000.
