The Federal Parliamentary Assembly of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is compromised of two bodies:- the House of People's Representatives and the House of Federation. House of People's RepresentativesThe House of People's Representatives (HPR) is made up of 548 members directly elected by the people within their districts. Members are chosen directly by popular vote from single member districts to serve five year terms. The HPR has the power of legislation in all matters assigned by the constitution to federal jurisdiction. House of FederationThe House of Federation, also known as the Federal Council, is comprised of 108 members representing the nine regions in the federation. Members are chosen by state assemblies to serve five year terms. The Federal Council has the power to interpret the constitution. The current Federal Parliamentary Assembly assumed legislative power in August 1995. Next general elections are scheduled to be held in 2000. |
