This is one area where the government
needs to assert itself as there is very little incentive for private businesses to invest
in assets that have long term returns - such as the general education of the people. The government has recently made significant
improvements by elevating the status of some of the more rural centers of Education to a 'university status'. These include Debub
University, Bahir Dar University, Mekele University and Jimma University.
This move will hopefully increase the funds allocated to Education in general in the country. It is refreshing to think that pupils will not
necessarily have to travel to Addis Ababa from all corners of the country
to get a decent education. But the lack of any private universities serves as a testament that the country is far behind in developing its
educational infrastructure. |
