This sector only contributes about 10% of the national GDP. It could use more investment. The succession of Eritrea left Ethiopia land-locked and export potential has been reduced significantly.

Major potential areas of manufacturing investment are food and beverages, textile and garment industries, leather industries, honey products, chemical and chemical product industries, mineral resource based industries and paper.

As a member of COMESA, Ethiopia enjoys preferential tariff rates for its exports into COMESA members. Its products, under the terms of the LOME Convention and GSP, are entitled to duty reductions or exemption, and are free from all quota restrictions in the EU, USA, Canada and Japanese markets.
